Attaching the Scope

Open the Grin app before position the scope over your device’s back-facing camera lenses. To make sure that the scope fits snugly over the camera, tighten the strap as needed. The strap should stay clear of any side buttons if possible. Pressing down on any of the side buttons may interrupt the scan process. Once the scope is positioned, you’re ready to find a mirror and start scanning.

Taking Your First Scan

Once you’ve got the app open and the scope is positioned, stand in front of a mirror and follow the app instructions. It will walk you through the process with a video and animations.

  1. You will be prompted to turn your phone to a horizontal position, stand in front of the mirror, and turn your phone around so the screen is facing away from you.
  2. Then, you will place your lips over the scope so that the wide end sits flush against your upper gums and bite down. Make sure the camera is positioned at the center of the scope.
  3. Tap the Start Scanning button and follow the on-screen prompts. The voiceover will ask you to move the scope all the way to the right side, then the left. Your bite may try to open but keep it closed.
  4. You’ll then return the scope to the center, open wide, and point the scope at your bottom teeth for a top-down view. You’ll repeat this for your top teeth, as well.
  5. Once you’re finished, you can view your scan and upload.

If you have clear aligners, you will be asked to scan twice - once with the aligners out and once with them in.

Scan Reminders

The Grin app can remind you to take scans at certain times during the day. To turn these reminders on and choose the time you’d like to be prompted to scan follow the below steps:

  1. Open the Grin app and click on the menu in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  2. Tap Settings and then choose Notification Settings.
  3. Select Change Here.
  4. Enter the time you’d like to be reminded and hit the save button.
